Zucchini is easy to grow, however certain conditions are essential for the plants to flourish. April is a good time to plant, and zucchini prefers light, fresh, loose, and humus soil.
In addition, you must also pay attention to the choice of seeds, they must be in an XXL format, otherwise sometimes reaching almost 2 cm in length. In case you decide to collect the seeds from your own squash, be aware that some varieties hybridize easily. So you can end up with “degenerate” zucchini.
But if this method you prefer, you just have to choose a fruit carried by a very vigorous foot. Wait until the fruit is fully ripe before collecting the seeds. Let them dry in a warm, humid place, then store the seeds inside a paper bag while waiting for the sowing period.
For the sowing of zucchini, you can opt directly for sowing under a frame or go through the sowing in a pocket. For sowing under frame, put two seeds per scoop, and in a bag, place 2 to 3 seeds per bag prepared with ripe compost. Push the seeds 1 to 2 centimeters deep. Finally, add potting soil to cover and keep the soil cool until emergence.
When the seeds have germinated, keep only one plant per scoop or pocket. Choose to keep the most vigorous of all. It is only when the frosts are no longer to be feared that you will set up the plants grown in pots under a frame, that is to say around mid-May.
When planting, you should also pay attention to the distance between the plants. 1 meter is sufficient for non-running varieties, but for running varieties, you will have to choose up to a spacing of 2 meters.
However, in a mini-vegetable garden, a zucchini can have its place in the center of a square of 1 meter side, especially if you have children because the handling of zucchini seeds is very suitable for junior gardeners.
If you have other cucurbits in your garden, such as cucumber or melon, also keep your seedlings and zucchini plants away from them. On the other hand, you can predict the proximity of seedlings of beans, corn, celery, lettuce, peas, onion which make good neighbors for squash, just like chamomile which attracts browsers.
