Eczema, dry skin, allergies, lice, scabies, insect bites … The causes of itching are different and diverse. In the dermatology department of the Brest University Hospital, Professor Laurent Misery and his team recently conducted a study and found that three quarters of patients consult this service due to itching.
While it is common to prescribe antihistamines to treat itching, Professor Misery’s team is campaigning for more comprehensive care, which includes psychologists and psychiatrists and dermatologists.
Indeed, apart from the allergic causes for which antihistamines are effective, itching can have other origins. But in any case, they turn into hell for the victim.
The first imperative is to eradicate the factors that trigger skin allergies: cosmetics, food, cleaning products.
Then, everything that is likely to irritate the skin must be prohibited: woolen or synthetic fabric clothing, excessive use of soap, frequent showers, among others.
Third step: moisturize the skin and avoid scratching with your nails at all costs.
If the itching is related to dry skin, insect bites or mild allergies that can be identified, there is no need to see your doctor.
Because crowding out triggers and a good moisturizer often does the trick.
On the other hand, if the itching is accompanied by fever, loss of appetite and fatigue, a visit to the doctor is essential.
It can indeed be an infection by parasites (worms, scabies, lice, fungi …) that targeted treatment will cure.
On the other hand, it should not be forgotten that itching can reveal serious health problems such as cancer, kidney failure, bile retention, thyroid problems, etc.
Finally, there is one case where itching should not be taken lightly.
As soon as they closely follow the intake of a drug or food and if there is difficulty in breathing, if an impressive swelling of the skin occurs or discomfort occurs, it is then necessary to go directly to the emergencies.
