Looking to save some money? Here’s how you can make your own laundry detergent

You can easily make your own DIY laundry detergent and save a lot of money in the process

Making your own laundry detergent sounds like a lot of hard work you can easily avoid by buying some detergent at the supermarket instead. But if you want to pinch some pennies, DIY detergent can really help you out because it’s a lot cheaper than the supermarket versions. Plus, it’s really not that difficult at all and once you get the hang of it, you won’t want to go back!

Making your own detergent can save you a lot of money.

DIY detergent

It’ll cost you hardly any money and it’ll provide you with wonderfully fresh-smelling, clean laundry. And as if that isn’t enough already, it’s also much better for the environment! What more do you want? We’ve got a recipe for you that is very easy to make and that will prove once again that not everything in life has to be expensive.

What do you need for 2.5 litres of homemade liquid laundry detergent?

  • 45 grams of washing soda
  • 45 grams of neutral soap bar
  • 2.5 litres of water
  • This is how you do it

    • Put a big pot (a soup pot, for example) on the stove. Add the 2.5 litres of water and put the heat on high. Wait until the water boils.
    • Grate the 45 grams of the soap bar and add this to the water. Stir it through until the soap has dissolved completely.
    • Add the 45 grams of washing soda to the boiling water as well. Again, stir it through until the soda has completely dissolved, too.
    • Turn off the heat and leave the mixture alone for at least 12 hours.
    • After the 12 hours are up, the mixture will have become thicker. Pour it into a big plastic container to store it.
    • This amount of detergent will definitely be enough for at least 40 loads of laundry!
    • Note: make sure the drum of your washing machine is made out of stainless steel! If it’s made of aluminium, the washing soda might damage it. Most modern washing machines are made of stainless steel, luckily.

    Expenses

This DIY detergent is so cheap because you only need a few ingredients. A bar of soap is very inexpensive and so is a kilo of washing soda – and you only need 45 grams of it! In the end, 2.5 litres of this homemade liquid detergent will cost your less than 1 euro. You won’t be able to find it cheaper anywhere else. And it’s much better for the environment too, so nature will thank you
